The baby teething keys

There's a bit of a story behind our logo

We came up with the name for our content control system first, deciding on TurnKey because it provides websites to clients that are not only ready to roll but also under their content control. We liked calling them living websites too, because they're alive in clients' hands.

But a logo? What icon would work for that and also capture the idea of simplicity and fun?

And then we saw a photo of some cute baby teething keys. Instantly we knew we'd found the graphical idea we needed. The problem was this picture was on a commercial photo library site and cost $500 for a single use — buying it outright for exclusive use as a logo would have cost more than our life's savings.

The five-and-dime solution

But an associate was wandering through a chain store shortly afterwards and saw the very same brand of actual baby teething keys for sale. They cost $1.48. Fired by the good luck, he lashed out and bought two whole packs.

We immediately opened one set of keys and took our own photograph of them, the very one we've used ever since as our logo. The photo at right shows how that was set up in our own makeshift studio. The other set remains unopened ... a kind of archive of our concept.

Total cost? A massive $2.96.

And related trivia ...

Observant visitors will notice that the five colours we consider the TurnKey corporate colours are of course the colours of the five plastic teething keys and we use them throughout the website and in all our print materials.
