Client Content Control

A cunning plan

Making changes with no programming language

The principle of a content management system (CMS) for websites has been around for a few years. But it's quite a fiddly principle to put into practice, and that means that CMS websites are regarded as complex and expensive to set up. Well, they are. Or were.

TurnKey has flipped that on its head with CCC ... client content control.

The concept of CMS

CMS websites are based on the idea that you can store a database on a website server just as easily as you can store a website. A database is any orderly filing system that stores information or images. One of the great things about databases is you don't need to be a programmer to change the information that's stored in them.

Some bright spark realised a while back that a website could fill itself up with the information stored in a database, and that if you then changed the information stored in the database the website would automatically change to match. That was quite an inspired idea.

It enables a website programmer to write the code that creates the website and the database, along with all the instructions the website needs to fill its pages from the database store, but then hand the whole thing over to the website's owner. From then on the owner just changes what's in the database ... without any need to use programming code at all.

Up and down

The upside's obvious. You can change the text and image content of your website easily without knowing programming languages and without having to hire a programmer every time.

The downside is you generally would still need a coder to make critical structural or design changes. And of course ... though it sounds easy, it only gets easy after it's created, and creating the website in the first place is clever, cunning, and expensive.

This made CMS websites the private toys of large corporates, companies with their own skilled IT department already in place, and who could afford the set-up costs.

Not any more

We designed TurnKey living websites specifically for small to medium businesses. We threw out some of the big corporate features and functions of traditional CMS that are of limited use to smaller businesses. We focused on the critical functions all people need. And we gave it important optional functions, so a business could choose what bits they wanted and thus how much it would cost, knowing they could always expand it later when money allowed.

Most importantly, we made the control panel very easy for ordinary people to understand and use.

Suddenly, CMS websites can be TurnKey CCC websites -- powerful, affordable, and easy.
